When we went to Bristol on the Thursday, we watched a series of moving images created by the artist John Akomfrah. He presented these images on a three-screen film, which was shown in Arnolfini gallery. The film was called vertigo sea and showed a mans relationship with the sea and how he explores it through histroy of slavery and conflict through poem and meditation.
Another short film that he created highlighted the greed, horror and cruelty of the whaling industry, along side showed african mirgrants fleeing across the sea in look of a 'better life' and by doing so he reminded us of the current issus around the globe with migrants putting themselves in danger in look for a better life and also the refugee crisis, slavery along side ecological concerns.
I really liked how this information was shown through moving image, even without words there was such a clear meaning behind it all and it gave out a strong message to everyone who was watching it. This is such a creative way to show off images, when I think of showing my images I just think about printing them out and writing about them but there are so many different ways to present your work. What I like most is how the messages he is trying to put out there are all mixed in together, the short film plays with different emotions which gives you a better understanding. I find that through moving image John Akomfrah gives these issues a voice, he shows a side that is rarely seen or spoken about.
